It’s been a funny old New Year. It began wonderfully on New Year’s Eve with a good fall of snow which is perfect when you are home, with plenty of food, wine and fuel and no particular place to go. Along with the December Blue Moon, there was magic in the air in the infant hours of 2010. New Year’s Day was a Friday and so we rolled into the weekend in a lazy, locked in kind of way.
However by Monday I was hoping to begin to establish a bit of routine back into my days leading up to Thursday when the girls were to go back to school. But more ice and snow put an end to that and gifted the kids two extra days holidays.
And so I found myself somewhat stalled, paused in a frozen limbo. Days merged into each other so that I felt a little disorientated. Is it Tuesday or Thursday? But yesterday (and it was Wednesday) I realised what a pleasure it has been to have been given a slow and relaxed start to 2010. I usually race headlong into the new year (and any new project) like the proverbial bull at a gate, tearing down all signs of Christmas on January 1st and setting my face firmly to the coming twelve months. This year has been all so different – thanks to Mother Nature.
And so on my usual quest for the meaning of life, I am wondering if the Universe is saying to me “relax, be calm, all is unfolding as it should” in a voice that is reminiscent of the Cadbury’s Caramel Bunny!
Anyway – therein lies my resolution for 2010 – I shall go with the flow, give up trying to exert control all the time and trust that all is happening exactly as it should. And that sounds just fine!
What about you? How does the Artic weather affect you?
Good for you. I was enjoying the snow until our boiler packed in this morning. Two children, one mummy, cabin fever and no heat does not a happy home maketh!
I was gritting paths in work today which was actually good fun! I had one student in which was also very good – he had enough attention by 2pm when we both decided it was time to go home. Spent a couple of hours planning for the months ahead in peace and quiet – so yes a nice relaxed start to the year. Not sure about another seven days of it though and am seriously missing my tennis!
I too had a relaxing start to the New Year. Was anxious to get back to the routine, until I heard the temperature, on the radio. Started snowing here again in the early hours of the morning. Still snowing. Will have snow here until April! All I can say is Que sera, sera! Enjoy your slow relaxing pace, while it lasts! :}
Going with the flow is good advice – It saves a lot of stress!
6 inches of snow here and the road out of our little part of the village was 4 inches deep with snow today! as we attempted to go out for much needed shopping. Neighbours were helping one another, lots of car pushing etc. We managed it in the end and enjoyed a very slow careful drive through sparkling snow and sunshine to the nearest town, where it was slightly surreal to see the empty roads and supermarket. Freshly stocked up, (and with a sack of wild bird seed too) we slowly drove home again, ready to sit out the freeze! I decided the best thing to do is adapt to the circumstances and make the best of it!
(I am so glad for a warm house without any draughts! Years of living in an old cottage really makes me appreciate double glazing and insulation!!)
As you say, a slowing down, no rushing into this new year!
@HCM good to hear from you.. I really truly hope that your heating is back by now. And if not that you and kiddies are in a hotel! Stay warm!
@Maureen – maybe you are not meant to be playing tennis yet.. certainly not in this weather. Let it go.. it will be time for tennis when its time for tennis!
@ Ann – read your blog today about your snow and temperatures. We have had maybe an inch of snow and have run out of grit and salt for roads. So Dublin is on part time hours and there is more snow forecast!
@ Susannah – you paint a lovely picture. Was watching the ITV news earlier and they showed a lovely picture of Britain taken by NASA and it looks like the whole country is covered in ice. It was stunning. Stay warm!
